Characters

Decided to share some character rigs I've worked on. Rigged in Anime Studio and Toon Boom.

Environment Concepts

While working on a project with a friend, I created some environment concepts to help build a vision of what we wanted. I drafted up tons of these type of drawings, some rough.

Trying my hand at Zbrush

As part of my anatomy studies I like to work inside Zbrush. It helps me to understand anatomy a lot more if I can build out the forms in 3D. Once I know the forms in 3D it becomes easier to draw them in a 2D medium. You can't draw a cube if you don't know how to build one.

So aside from my studies I began "messing around" in Zbrush. Below are the results. No purpose, just fun!

P.M

Working on a private project with an old friend of mine. We're concepting and writing everything from the ground up. Here are some early stage characters concepts I created.

3D

I've always been interested and inspired by 3D. Been a while since I last did any work in Maya so I figured it was time I went back to build something. Below are a few different fast preview renders of a tank I concepted and modelled just for fun! :)

Developing a Charcoal Style

Been a while since I've last updated this blog. Since the last charcoal study, i've done plenty more and I've discovered new techniques.

Charcoal Studies

Recently, I've been very interested in portraits and traditional rendering methods. One of my "new" techniques for rendering revolves around the use of charcoal. I sketch out the construction lines using a light graphite pencil and then begin to block in the values using a charcoal pencil. I have also found the use of a soft brush extremely helpful! A lot of fun and I will definitely be using charcoal far more in my studies and sketches :)

Mooarrr Study

Been filling this book with quick anatomy sketches now for several weeks. The best thing about keeping them quick is being able to forget about them. This makes it easier (at least for me) to take a look back every once in a while with fresh eyes and observe my wrong doings. Being a critic of your own work is a hard thing to do and also something I find to be extremely valuable.

Here's some examples of my sketchbook work... gettin there

Some Study

Going to be doing a great deal of these type of studies. Grab some reference, grab my tablet, open Photoshop and paint! Great fun to do although quite difficult. I'd say this one took me just under two hours. My goal here isn't to copy the reference perfectly, rather it's to observe the reference and take note of the structure and the lighting, improvising and substituting colours wherever I desire.

In addition here's a harmless soldier I never got around to uploading :)

Character concept

Coming up with a few concepts for a 3D character and this is one of them.

Air

Another one hour sketch for tonight. These are a lot of fun and good practice!

Patrol

One hour sketch of this dude. I wonder what he's up to?

College End of Year Show

Here's a look at some life drawing exercises I completed during my final year at Coláiste Dhulaigh. These boards were printed, mounted and shown at our classes end of year show.

I also gathered a few concepts and shots from my end of year short film for show alongside my classmates work.

Quick little Thursday night sketch

Each took around 30 mins, the purpose is to explore some different types of materials and compositions..... annnnd just for fun. Will try nail down some more detailed pieces soon.

Back to Painting!

Finally getting some time now to get back into digital painting and I couldn't be happier! Heres one I created today! Safe to say... I'm rusty! After a while though the keyboard short cuts did come back to me! Like a WHILE....

Found a sweet colour wheel extension for use in PS aswell, Coolorus. Definitely worth a try.
